Our company was founded in 1877 by Thomas McCarthy who emigrated from Ireland to London and had a fruit stall in Drury Lane. The family took their summer holidays in Great Yarmouth and towards the end of the 19th century his son Daniel settled there and started up a fruit & vegetable business. |
|
Their warehouse was bombed during an enemy air raid on Great Yarmouth in 1942, and most of their lorries were requisitioned by the government. After the war supplies of fruits and vegetables slowly returned to normal although most were still on ration. In 1946 the first bananas since 1939 arrived in Gt.Yarmouth. |

After Daniel joined the Navy during the first World War his son Dan aged 12 left school and started work helping his mother on their market stall. With her help Dan eventually moved into wholesaling. The business prospered and became a limited company on 5th May 1939. |
After finishing his National Service Dan’s son John took over management of the business, and now his sons: Martin, Simon, David, and Peter have become the fifth generation of the family actively engaged in the running of the company. In 2009 the first representative of the sixth generation, Simon’s son Daniel, joined the firm. |
